Yesterday was filled with surprises here. It was a busy day and I knew when I rolled out of bed that we needed to get as much done as possible. It was then, that God once again showed me that my ways are not His. : ) All my stressing is for naught and I really need to just learn that and get over it.
The kids did manage to get most of the work done that I had planned for them – all the basics at least. Our day was pleasantly interrupted by a phone call from Papa wanting to take the boys fishing. Well, who can say ‘no’ to Papa? So off the boys went on a fishing good time.
This of course left the girls standing there looking at me with that ‘what are we going to do????’ look. Fortunately for me, I had a crafty card up my sleeve – Princess Papers from Lapbook Lessons.
These are the cutest little lapbooks on correspondence and they’re FREE. There’s also a wonderful YouTube video about how to put them together. Basically it’s three file folders folded up and glued together, I think. I had printed all the bits out and constructed the pokets months ago and was just waiting for the right time to pull them out. Initially, I was thinking they would be for Abs and a friend, but it worked out having two sets on hand!
The first pocket holds note cards and envelopes. Abs loves to write letters and is always asking me for paper, cards (or making her own) and for so-and-so’s address. The blue flap holds a letter writing tutorial. On the opposite side is a pocket for stamps and a tutorial on addressing envelopes.
The second pocket is for letters and templates. The first little blue booklet is a list of Paul’s epistles. The second holds the definition of an epistle and the third is a booklet of questions about how ‘Princess’ can share God’s love through epistles of her own. The templates pocket is for holding templates for things such as envelopes and cards – for making your own instead of buying pre-made ones.
The last pocket is for email and phone information. In here, we have stored a phone contract, phone message notes, and an address book. The phone contract is a great tool – like a written promise and instructions for the child if and when they answer the telephone. The front has a booklet covering email etiquette and a flap with a phone call tutorial.
These were lots of fun to make, though it was definitely over Mags’ head. (she is only 4) But preparation was the key to success here. I had printed out everything, cut the titles and had all the pretty papers laid out and ready to go. If you do this lapbook I want to strongly encourage you to prepare! : ) Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. Oh and if you’re wondering, they also have a Prince’s Papers.
Well the boys made it back home after catching a whopping NINE fish! They only brought four home to show off, thank goodness. Fortunately for me, Papa took them to the pond after the photo op. : )
Okay so we didn’t get everything done today that I had planned but we still had a great day. We ended the day with a reading from The Hobbit. I think the kids are really going to enjoy this book. We watched a few highlights from LOTR just to give them a better picture of what hobbits and hobbit holes look like. They thought this was wonderful, along with staying up an hour past bedtime.
We have delayed our trip until tomorrow. Just too much work to get done before I leave. So tomorrow we are off to Kentucky, spending Mother’s day with my mom. In the meantime, have a great week and don’t forget to plan something wonderful for Your mom. : )
