Andy & Spirit Go to the Fair…
This is the second book in a series by Mary Jean Kelso about a handicapped boy and his equine therapy horse, Spirit. This book is a pretty quick read which dives into the world of 4-H competition. At the end of the book you find three pages of information on horses and 4-H.
This is a cute story and because it’s fairly short, I think this would be an excellent series for a reluctant older reader. Another interesting bit of information is that a portion of the proceeds go to a couple of organizations called Healing Reins and Horseplay.
Earthquake…
I love, love, love this book! It’s filled to the brim with information, facts and preparedness instruction. The material is presented in a very kid-friendly way, easing fears while completely explaining the what, when and why of earthquakes. I highly recommend this book! It would be a great resource for a report or a lapbook too.
Maybe We Are Flamingos…
Maybe We Are Flamingos is a sweet tale of two baby flamingos trying to fit in with the crowd. Interesting facts about the birds are tucked discreetly into the storyline, teaching while entertaining. SafariSue tells a fun little story in Maybe We are Flamingos.
This book is also available on an iTouch or iPhone app called iKids Play. This is the first in what is to be a series available in the future. I bought this app to test it out on my kiddos. We love fun kid apps for the iTouch and somtimes even use them for studying and quizzing. This app has five main functions: a reader, a recorder for you to record yourself reading, coloring pages, a drawing program and a rub & reveal game. Though I believe it is most appropriate for a young child around ages 5 and 6, my olders love to play just the same.
The Sum of Our Parts: No Bones About It…
No Bones About It is book 1 in the The Sum of Our Parts Series by Bill Kirk. Reading in rhymes, this book names all the bones of the body and shares lots of fun facts. At the end you’ll find diagrams of the skeleton with and without the names of the bones. This is a great tool for learning the bones and quizzing in a fun way. Another great *bonus* is the mystery bones scattered throughout the book. See if you can name them all… Here again, I’m envisioning an entire science series of lapbooks based on The Sum of Our Parts Series! = )
Rainbow Sheep…
This is one of those books that I would just love to touch. The photos are beautiful and make me want to run my hand across the screen of my laptop to feel the soft fuzzies of the felt. lol
Being a knitter, my favorite part of this adorable book is the 4-page tutorial on felting at the end of the story. It even contains a couple of fun crafts for kids to try!
Final words: These e-books are pretty good! I love an actual book in hand but I don’t have near the room I wish I had for an enormous library. Sometimes e-books just make more sense. If you really like these e-books but would prefer a tangible book, they are also available in cd, paperback and some in dvd format.
