Who knew caring for a baby would require so much time and effort?  Winking smile  So I’ve spent much of the last 8 months cuddling, ogling and, in general, just adoring my sweet Talitha and her siblings.  Those cute kids, I tell ya!  Who wants to blog when you’ve got 5 adorable distractions to otherwise occupy your time?

DSCN0738Anyhoo, we’ve been completely enjoying having a new baby in the house.  Things seem so different this time around.  I think mostly my patience has grown.  Remembering back, it seems like there were so many days of raw nerves, lots of coffee and as many Barney movies as I could get my hands on.  These days things aren’t so… intense.  I’m remembering back and cherishing all the moments I rushed past with all my other babies.  These moments are both sad and sweet.  I’m so thankful the Lord has given me the peace and patience to slow down and enjoy each new stage in Talitha’s life.  I just wish I hadn’t been so harried with my others. *sigh*

But the Lord is good and gracious.  My first baby is going to be twelve in a month.  So much time that has sped past me… Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed these twelve years immensely.  I just wish I’d had, back then, all the knowledge and wisdom the Lord has granted over the course of those twelve years! LOL  I suppose this is the case with most of life.  Anyway, before I sink down deep, let’s switch gears, shall we?

    Homestead happenings…

Our little Old Town homestead is staying quite busy fighting off the woodchuck (who’s been known to eat 7 tomatoes in one day!) and brewing up herbal concoctions.  Currently, I’m preparing lots of labels for salves, diaper rash creams, bug bite balms and tea.  Labels are a pain in the hooey!  My printer and word processing program have no desire to cooperate with each other which only produces completely skewed labels.  I’ve had to intervene in less than pleasant ways.  Stupid machines. Smile with tongue out  Let’s see, I also made Bug Bite Balm in the midst of some birthday party craziness.  My sweet friend Danielle had just returned from the jungles of Indonesia and, poor thing!, had bites all over her legs.  So I broke out the plantain and went to work.  I’ll put some up in my etsy store in case any of you are interested.  Plantain is a wonderful plant for bug bites.  If you can identify it easily (which you can.  It’s most likely growing in your yard or sidewalk right now!) you can pinch off a leaf, chew it up and spit it onto a bite or sting for instant relief.  I’ll also be putting some tub tabs and gardener’s salve in the etsy shop.  It’s taken me forever to get that shop up and running but I’m slowly getting there.

Our latest crafty project was tissue poms.  They are currently hanging from the living and dining room ceilings – all 90 of them.  Surprised smile  Yep, ninety tissue poms.  It took a long time but it was fun!  There are a slew of tutorials out there on how to make them, but these are my favorites:

Don’t go buy a kit to make these!  Go to the Dollar Store and get 2 – 30 ct. packs of tissue paper.  You can get 5 large poms and 10 small ones from that much tissue.

Oh and before I go I have to share with you my new favorite corner of the web, Pinterest!  Run over and take a peek.  If you get an invite be sure and friend knittingprose!

the seven disciplines of the tongue…

Posted By on April 20, 2011

This would be an excellent time to read through James 3.

    James 3:6-10

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.  The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hellFor every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.  It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.  From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.  My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    A recipe, Pepperoni Pesto Wraps…

    Pepperoni pesto WrapsDSCN0661

Here’s a great way to eat your herbs!

    • pepperoni slices
    • whole wheat tortillas, medium sized
    • mozzarella cheese, shredded
    • pesto

These are so yum!  They’re very quick but taste like you put work into them.

Spread pesto on a whole wheat tortilla, add slices of pepperoni and sprinkle with cheese.  Roll them up and secure with a toothpick.  Place in an oven preheated at 350 degrees and let those puppies warm up til the cheese melts.  15 – 25 minutes

These are SO filling!  One per person is plenty with some fresh veggies and dip. Enjoy!DSCN0664

    God is Good… with kisses

Posted By on March 24, 2011

I am not an early riser.  I would love to be. As yet I haven’t learned to practice the discipline.  But.  I love kissing my husband goodbye everyday.  Honestly?  It’s the driving force that gets me out of bed in the morning.  If it weren’t for my desire to kiss my husband goodbye I’d probably sleep in on a regular basis. (True, I’ve been known to get my kiss and head straight back to bed on occasion.)  So this morning I awoke to a hungry baby and as I nursed her in bed I could hear the usual sounds of an O’shea morning – the heater in the bathroom, the pantry door swaying on it’s hinges, water running in the sink.  Finally, with the baby all done I knew it was time to get up for my kiss.  But I was so tired.  I’ve had such a hard time sleeping lately due to some medical issues.  I’d just shared with my husband the night before about my sleeping woes.  Last night was no different.

    Clothes swap, liniment and birthday…

Posted By on March 22, 2011

I am such a horrible blogger.  It’s been two weeks since I’ve said a single word.  We just get all crazy around here and have so much more to do than time we have to write about it.  Anyhoo, remember I mentioned the clothes swap two weeks ago?  It was AWESOME!  I think I got rid of 2/3 of my wardrobe and brought back home only about 5 pieces.  Yay!  AND my closet looks so nice and clean.  See?

    after2

That may not look too hot to you but it looks way better than it did before.  Here’s what I had to contend with.before

    So that went spectacularly well.

DSCN0652Another item I accomplished was decanting the liniment I had made.  That all went well, thought it took a while to get it strained.  Because I put it in a bottle with a sprayer, I had to filter it really well.  Sediment in sprayers is a no no.  After all that time put into making, decanting and filtering this liniment, my family tells me it smells horrible and no way will any of them live with me if I use it.  Yes, they thought it was that bad!  LOL  I didn’t find it repulsive at all but apparently our noses are nothing alike.   *sigh*  So now I have two and a half bottles of  a nice herbal liniment to throw away.  Sad smile  Very bummed.

My birthday was delightful.  My husband took me to the Landing for dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory.  We had such a wonderful time enjoying some delicious Italian cuisine (my favorite kind!) and discussing all sorts of Biblical things.  One thing we discussed on the way home – I was so saddened to see the way young women dress themselves.  My heart aches for these girls who feel they must cheapen themselves in order to have any worth at all.  Not to mention the style of dress these days.  And we make fun of Louis XIV!!  Also, I was struck by the prevailing lifestyle of drunkenness.  I’m saddened that this is what makes peoples lives worth living to them!  Really?  Drunkenness is the driving force of perseverance in life?  To make it through another week, we look to a few days of drunken stupor?  I just don’t understand it.  I imagine that if I were to ask any number of people who live this way what their purpose in life is their answer wouldn’t be drunkenness and yet this is the life they live anyway.

We are a deceived people living in a world of lies.  How I pray that our eyes would be opened to the foolishness we call ‘living’.

    the week begins…

Posted By on March 7, 2011

It’s Monday!  What a wonderful day; a great way to end a good weekend.  We spent Friday, Saturday AND Sunday largely with the body of Christ.  It was a full three days of sweet worship, fellowship and prayer with my fellow heirs.  I really can’t think of a better way to spend the days.

    This week’s ‘To Do’ list:

    • work on labels for my lip balms & liniments
    • sort clothes for our clothes swap on Friday and for project Simplify
    • mix up a special liniment for a dear friend with varicose veins
    • plant some seeds & work on the garden
    • prepare for company on Thursday (I’ll share my recipe with you)
    • doctor’s visit on Friday
    • visiting with friends on Saturday
    • and Sunday’s my birthday!!!  Party smile
    • oh yes, and don’t forget all that laundry

My sewing table has been taken over by a Lego city which makes sewing a little difficult.  I’ve got a couple of aprons I need to finish up plus, Abigail’s Easter skirt.  Why is it always the trim that takes me forever to get done?  I can have a garment completely done except for a tiny little thing and then I’ll take months to get back to it.  It must be some disorder or traumatic past that causes me to be this way.  I’m sure there’s a medical term for it and a pill to cure it.  And just as sure, my insurance wouldn’t cover it.  Oh well.  I’m hoping to get the silly aprons finished off this week or next.  I’ll just have to start early enough to have the dinner table cleaned up by suppertime… unless Lego city just happens to experience some severe weather.

It’s going to be a very busy week, Lord willing.

    Liniments and thrush…

Posted By on March 4, 2011

liniment2Yesterday the labels I needed for my herbal products arrived along with a digital scale.  Scales are so handy when dealing with herbs.  You can measure in parts but it’s so much more precise when using a scale.  Obviously, your herbal concoctions end up much more consistent.

liniment1I’ve mostly been waiting on the scale to mix up some liniment.  The recipe I have for liniment uses comfrey root, valerian root, calendula flowers, cinnamon, and cayenne.  It’s great for increasing circulation, healing bruises and relieving sore muscles.  I can’t wait to get it all bottled up and ready for use!

    Calendula and other herbal oils…

Posted By on February 28, 2011

Last week I made some calendula oil in the crockpot and told you we’d strain it up in three days.  So today, we’re straining oil.  I’m going to show you some other herbal oils too.  But first, let’s get our calendula oil.

    Making calendula oil…

Posted By on February 24, 2011

calendulaCalendula is not only a beautiful flower but it’s also a very healing herb.  Calendula, sometimes called pot marigold, is an herb known for its anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antiseptic properties.  It’s commonly used to heal wounds and treat muscle spasms.  These lovely flowers have been used for everything from hair dyes to eye treatments to headaches.  Calendula is by far one of my favorite herbs to work with.  That’s why we’re making calendula oil today. Smile

    Sheets to skirts…

Posted By on February 17, 2011

I love sewing.  I just wish I had more time to do it.  My girls adore the skirts and aprons I make for them and it’s a wonderful way to save on clothing purchases.  A nice long skirt will run you $15 – $30 for a child’s size.  When I have to do some clothes shopping, I’m hoping to get at least 4 pieces of clothing out of that much money!  Well, it’s rare that I do get that many but it’s my target.

I’ve found a great way to get a better deal than that with a little extra effort.  Wanna know my secret?  (more…)
